Birth Defects

Birth defects

When a child is born with the congenital problems (birth defects) of the hand & upper extremities it becomes immediate & long term psychological trauma to the parents. Most often the Hand surgeon has the responsibility of handling the situation. He has to become a guide, counsellor, surgeon for the family.

Many a times this congenital anomalies are associated with other systemic hidden disorders which need to addressed, investigated & treatment has to be co-ordinated with many different specialist at appropriate time.

One must be aware of what disease/syndrome a child is born with? What investigation the child requires? Is there any associated life threatening disorders? Is there any need for other specialist to be involved? & if any surgery is required then what is the appropriate age for that. Proper timing of surgery is very important for getting the best results.

Many a times nonsurgical treatment along with physiotherapy & splintage can give the good results.

In our circumstances most common question asked is whether the child will be able to do the independent activity of daily living or not.

Not in all but in most of the cases they are able to do the same because of great capacity of adaptation these kids have, saying this gives a great Psychological comfort to the patient & boost their confidence towards treating doctor.
